Microsoft's Terry Myerson who has been leading Microsoft's efforts in transforming Windows from a slow to update OS into a more regularly updated product to keep Windows fresh is out after 21 years of service.

Microsoft is creating two new engineering teams, one focused on experiences and devices, and the other devoted to artificial intelligence and computing capabilities hosted in the internet cloud, according to the note.

The company also announced the formation of two engineering teams who will help "accelerate [their] innovation and better serve the needs of [their] customers and partners long into the future". Nadella has selected Rajesh Jha, executive vice president of the Office 365 group, to lead it.

Additionally, Jason Zander was promoted to executive vice president of Microsoft's Azure, the company's cloud platform.

Guthrie's team includes many existing Microsoft leaders. For instance, one team will exclusively be working on augmented- and mixed-reality technologies while others focus on different tasks.

Myerson's departure signals Nadella's continued push to make the Windows operating system less central to Microsoft's ambitions in the years ahead.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has no easy task steering the company well past the era of its personal computing dominance, through the current cloud and mobile-oriented period and into the AI and possibly VR driven future. Myerson says that the Windows 10 has seen an uptick of 84% in the commercial usage.

With Myerson's departure, Panos Panay will step up to the title of chief product officer. One of the last public appearances made by Myerson was in December during the Qualcomm-Windows platform event. The goal of the the newly created "Windows and Devices Group" was, in the CEO's words, to "propel the Windows ecosystem forward" and "drive Windows as a service across devices of all types" to increase hardware sales.

"This reorganization clearly outlines Microsoft's priorities-cloud, coupled with AI, and an improved experience for users of Microsoft's applications", Ed Anderson, research vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, told eWEEK. The Cloud + AI Platform team will be led by Scott Guthrie, executive vice president, who will expand his current responsibilities.

Nadella shared the news in an email to employees. Harry Shum, the Executive VP of AI and Research will continue to lead that unit.

"Among other steps, we are investing in strategies and tools for detecting and addressing bias in AI systems and implementing new requirements established by the GDPR", Nadella said of the new project.
