Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan To Go Jail For 5 Years: Poaching Case

As Salman Khan is held guilty in the blackbuck case a look at money riding on Bollywood’s Bhai

After a legal battle that lasted almost 20 years, a prominent Bollywood actor once seen by many as above the law was convicted of poaching two endangered blackbuck antelopes and sentenced to five years in prison.

52-year-old Khan could have been sentenced for six years in prison as he faces charges under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act.

Indian media reports suggest it could take days for Khan's legal team to apply for bail and appeal the conviction over the 20-year-old case which threatens to derail his illustrious career.

A fine of Rs 10,000 was also slapped on him.

Refuting these allegations, H M Saraswat, the defence counsel for Salman Khan, had said there were many loopholes in the prosecution's story and the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond any doubt. Khan's lawyers said he was carrying an air gun, which can not be used for hunting an antelope. While the mega star has been acquitted on all accounts for his "hit-and-run" case, he has been sentenced to five years in jail for poaching an endangered species.

His co-stars, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam, were all acquitted after it was discovered that the vehicle was driven by Khan.

In an unrelated case, he was acquitted in December 2015 of shooting and killing a gazelle and two antelopes in separate incidents, after previously being convicted by a lower court. A higher court is challenging his acquittal.

Some actors came out in Khan's support. He launched a charity called Being Human - The Salman Khan Foundation that took on various health and education initiatives and was seen participating in various philanthropic activities.

Salman also infamously spent some time in a Mumbai jail for a hit and run in Bandra on September 28, 2002, when his white Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly crashed into the American Express Bakery at Hill Road at Bandra, killing one person and injuring four others. In 2013, a sessions court convicted Salman of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, but he was granted interim bail by the Bombay High Court.
