Election Expands Liberals' Presence on Wisconsin Supreme Court

A Milwaukee family says it's outraged after seeing a political advertisement on TV that they say identifies child victims of sexual assault

Former Vice President Joe Biden and a host of other Democrats supported Dallet, while the state Republican Party and Gov. Scott Walker came out for Screnock. Dallet is challenging Sauk County Judge Michael Screnock for a spot on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. It is a race catching national attention.

Kenosha County was one of 24 Wisconsin counties President Donald Trump won in 2016 that backed a liberal candidate for the supreme court seat.

Those same "Big government special interests" that flooded Wisconsin with "distorted facts and misinformation" will next employ their winning strategy against him, he predicted. "I think they're ready to have fair and independent courts".

"There was just great motivation on the part of people who were not comfortable with the status quo", says Jay Heck, executive director of Common Cause in Wisconsin. Walker is up for re-election to a third term in November.

Even more worrying for Republicans is that Democratic candidates have had success in areas Trump won easily in 2016, including a special election for a US Senate seat in Alabama in December, and then in March when Democrat Conor Lamb won a House seat in western Pennsylvania's deep-red steel country. But this year's race has attracted several high-profile Democrats, including former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Dallet says Screnock will be a "rubber stamp" on the court for Walker, the Republican Party, WMC and the NRA.

The Brennan Center for Justice found that $2.6 million had been spent on TV and radio advertising in the race.

The last time a liberal won an open seat was in 1995 when Justice Ann Walsh Bradley was first elected. With Dallet's win, six of the seven members of the court are now women.

Screnock campaigned as a traditional conservative jurist, saying he would interpret the law as written and decrying judicial activism.

Vos also has the gall to say he "wants judges who follow the rule of the law", when the majority of judges in our Supreme Court have proven by their decisions that they're in the pockets of the governor. "We really don't know whether they will shift in something like the same proportions we've seen in the specials and in the Supreme Court or whether they'll revert more back to a normal divide of the vote".

On April 5, 2011, Court of Appeals Judge Joanne Kloppenburg challenged incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser for a 10-year term on the Court.

He also said it's where she won that made a difference.

Before becoming a judge at the County Circuit Court, Dallet served as an assistant district attorney with the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office and as an adjunct professor of law at Marquette University Law School. She was re-elected in 2014 for a term that will expire in 2020.

Dallet had the financial edge in the race, raising more than $1 million.

"It's not surprising when you've got one party in control in the state where the Republicans have controlled everything". In that race, the conservative candidate narrowly prevailed.
