German police say Muenster attacker acted alone, had no political motive

Police confirmed there had been casualties but did not immediately say what happened

Die Welt said the four suspects were linked to Anis Amri, a Tunisian man with Islamist militant ties who killed 12 people in an attack in Berlin in December 2016 when he hijacked a truck and drove it into a crowded marketplace.

He was a Munster resident and apparently well off. He stressed that the investigation was at an early stage but said "at the moment, nothing speaks for there being any Islamist background". "But he was well known to the police".

The Sueddeutsche Zeitung said the man had psychological problems.

The prosecutor said Jens B. had run-ins with the law relating to violent conduct, property damage and fraud, but all charges had been dismissed.

Notably, investigators said the 48-year-old German man, identified as Jens B.by local media, was known to police. Their names weren't given as is customary in Germany.

Early Sunday, all three bodies were taken from the crash scene in front of the well-known Kiepenkerl pub.

There is no information on whether there is a connection between the van driving into the crowd and the planned demonstration. What makes this story take a weird turn is that the driver of the vehicle shot and killed himself inside it.

German authorities do not believe there is a terrorist motive behind the attack, but it is believed the police searched the driver's apartment for explosives.

Of the injured, some were in life-threatening condition.

"This was a frightful and sad day for the people of Munster, all of Germany. and also the people of the Netherlands, who were sitting here and became victims", he said.

The premier of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, was also present, and said that Saturday had been "a frightful, tragic day for the people of M√ľnster".

The crash happened in Muenster, a western city of about 300,000 people.

And in Spain, the jihadists also claimed a rampage along Barcelona's Las Ramblas boulevard in August 2017 that killed 14 and left more than 100 injured.

As per a Reuters report, the vehicle ploughed into people seated at tables outside the Grosser Kiepenkerl eatery, a popular destination for tourists in the city's old town, killing a 51-year-old woman from Lueneburg and a 65-year-old man from Borken.

The attack is the latest in a string across Europe in which vehicles have been used to attack crowds of people in public places.
