North Korean leader wants security guarantee from Washington

The United States and North Korea already had several meetings to prepare for their upcoming summit

US President Donald Trump said on Monday he planned to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next month or in early June and hoped the discussions would ultimately lead to an end of the North's nuclear weapons program.

The news was confirmed when North Korea has shown their willingness to discuss the issue.

Trump had said he would meet with Kim by May.

Trump later threatened to hold off on signing the renegotiated deal until after his summit with Kim, which was widely seen as a move to pressure Seoul to remain tough with Pyongyang. During previous negotiations under different US administrations, the North has agreed to freeze its nuclear weapons program in exchange for the lifting of global economic sanctions, only to violate the agreement by testing more weapons.

The communications, still at a preliminary stage, have involved State Department officials talking to North Korea, apparently through its United Nations mission, and intelligence officers from both sides using a separate back channel, the official said.

In a growing rapprochement on the Korean peninsula, Kim is scheduled to meet the South's president Moon Jae-in for a rare inter-Korean summit on April 27. He did not clarify where the session might take place.

North Korea's recent surge in diplomatic activity marks a stunning turnaround after a year of heightened tensions which saw the North fire multiple missiles and carry out its most powerful nuclear test, further isolating the regime and triggering a fiery war of words with Trump.

But Kim's recent trip to China and a series of back-channel contacts between the United States and North Korea have raised hopes that a deal may just be possible.

"We have a meeting that is being set up with North Korea, so that will be very exciting, I think, for the world".

"Kim Jong Un is ready", she said after Kim met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Chung Eui-yong, the director of the South Korean National Security Council, advised Kim Jong Un to stop smoking during a conversation.

Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar is also considered as one of the possible locations, the report added.
