Theresa May to lead National Security Council meeting on 'barbaric' Syria attack

Donald Trump

Prime Minister Theresa May said that the United Kingdom was considering what action was necessary in response to the "barbaric" attack which has left at least 40 people, including children, dead.

Russia's offer comes as President Donald Trump is threatening an imminent military strike against Syria. "Everybody is going to pay a price. He will, everybody will".

The suspected poison gas attack Saturday on the besieged town of Douma came nearly exactly a year after the US missile attack prompted by the Khan Sheikhoun deaths. A Navy destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, was underway in the eastern Mediterranean.

Any response is likely to be coordinated with European allies, principally French President Emmanuel Macron, with whom Trump has spoken twice since the attack occurred.

The Trump administration has also asked the United Nations Security Council to authorize an independent inquiry into the attack.

"If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out and we'll know the answers quite soon", Trump said.

The United States, meanwhile, urged the U.N. Security Council to adopt a resolution that would condemn the continuing use of chemical weapons in Syria "in the strongest terms" and establish a new body to determine responsibility for chemical attacks.

"It is not us who wants to alienate Russian Federation, she alienates herself", Ms Pierce added.

The White House deliberations came as Russian Federation and the Syrian military blamed Israel for a pre-dawn missile attack on a major air base in central Syria, saying Israeli fighter jets launched missiles from Lebanon's air space.

Many Syria analysts have said Trump's call to draw down the mission may have given Assad confidence that using chemical weapons wouldn't bring consequences.

The alleged chemical weapons attack in the city of Douma this past weekend, which has left dozens dead, seems to offer proof that Trump's 2017 strike failed to act as a warning against further chemical weapons use.

It was not yet clear what decision Trump would make in response to the latest attack in Syria.

The ministers "noted that global investigators mandated by the UN Security Council had found the Assad regime responsible for using poison gas in at least four separate attacks since 2014 and agreed that those responsible for this attack must be held to account", the statement added.

Officials in Washington were seeking to verify early reports by rescuers and others that the Assad government was culpable.

Last week Trump said he wanted to pull U.S. troops out of Syria, though his advisers have urged him to wait to ensure Islamic State militants are defeated and to prevent Assad's ally Iran from gaining a foothold there.

"Since the first reports of alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma, Syrian Arab Republic, were issued, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has been gathering information from all available sources and analyzing it".

Last month, a United Nations commission of inquiry released a report accusing the regime of committing war crimes in Eastern Ghouta, including the use of chemical weapons against civilians.

"We are very concerned, when a thing like that can happen, this is about humanity". The U.N. Security Council planned to hold an emergency meeting Monday to discuss the attack. They include sea-launched cruise missiles aboard ships within range of Syria.

Fielding questions at the White House, Trump press secretary Sarah Sanders said it would be "outrageous" to say that Trump's recent announcement that he intends to remove all US forces from Syria in the coming months had emboldened Assad.

Syrian government forces pressed their offensive against the last rebel-held town in eastern Ghouta near the capital Damascus on Saturday under the cover of airstrikes as shelling of civilian areas on both sides claimed more lives, state media and opposition activists said.

Also Tuesday, Russia vetoed a USA draft resolution at the UN Security Council that would have established an independent investigation into what happened in Douma.

The U.S. military appeared to be in position to carry out any attack order.

The Atlantic: The Terrible Cost Of Obama's Failure In Syria - "Four years ago, it nearly looked as if chemical attacks on Syrian civilians would stop". "I wouldn't take anything off the table", said Tom Bossert, the White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser, in an interview.
