Woah! Steven Spielberg to produce-direct Blackhawk official film adaptation

Director Steven Spielberg More

Warner Bros' Picture Group chairman, Toby Emmerich, is thrilled about Spielberg's involvement.

Steven Spielberg to direct his first superhero film, Blackhawk. The series features a mysterious man known only as Blackhawk and team of World War II-era ace pilots called the Blackhawk Squadron. The Blackhawk squadron also made a short appearance in the animated film Justice League: The New Frontier.

The Oscar-winner is now soaring off the massive success of his latest release Ready Player One, as its $476 million in worldwide box office has made him the first director whose films have grossed at least $10 billion, Box Office Mojo reported.

Granted, sci-fi is a genre that the world's most famous director knows inside and out, but The Hollywood Reporter has said that Spielberg looks set to move into uncharted territory - the world of comic books. It's also worth noting that Blackhawk wasn't a DC property originally. Well, more specifically Marvel films because Wonder Woman and Nolan's Batman trilogy aside, the DC films tend to land up quite underwhelming.

Writing the screenplay is long-time Spielberg collaborator David Koepp.

On the heels of their successful collaboration on "Ready Player One", Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment are again teaming with Warner Bros. Their popularity in comics wanes from time to time now, but their most prominent use in comics recently was in DC: The New Frontier (and its animated adaptation) and a brief role in Dark Nights: Metal.

Speilberg is no stranger to WWII films, he has helmed classics such as Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, and Empire of the Sun. If you count in the projects he has produced as well, his movies have amassed an estimated $17.2 billion, according to the website. He is a small studio unto himself, and a one-man institution so powerful that Warner Bros. -a studio he's collaborated-probably wouldn't dare to micromanage him. The release date of the movie on the big screen remains unknown. Spielberg will be bankrolling the film through his production house Amblin Entertainment, along with Warner Bros, and he is also expected to direct it.
