President Trump to "Get involved" in Russian Federation investigation

However, Dowd did not immediately make clear in what context the possibility of a subpoena was raised or how serious Mueller's prosecutors were about the move.

Trump's lawyers are careful to say that the President hasn't shut the door to a possible agreement for an interview.

Trump has tapped Emmett Flood, who advised Bill Clinton during his impeachment proceedings, to assist in the Russian Federation investigation after the lead White House attorney handling the probe announced plans to retire. Although Mueller's team has indicated to Trump's lawyers that he's not considered a target, investigators remain interested in whether the president's actions constitute obstruction of justice and want to interview him about several episodes in office. He ultimately became the first sitting president to testify before a grand jury about his conduct. Instead, Mueller's team agreed to give Trump's attorneys more details on the topics prosecutors wanted to discuss with the president.

Others, including members of Trump's legal team, said the Nixon case refers to document production, not physical testimony.

And Mueller reportedly suggested he could subpoena Trump if necessary.

The questions are a reminder of just how aberrant this White House has been.

Caputo and other Trump associates have hired attorneys to deal with the various Russian Federation investigations in Congress and by special counsel Mueller, often at a high price tag. After all, if they believe a sit-down interview would be treacherous, what better way to persuade him to avoid it than telling him he has already vanquished Mueller - that the public agrees the probe has been discredited and will cheer him on as he flouts the demand for an interview?

From the start, Trump's legal team has been out-manned by Mueller's.

The law firm of Williams & Connolly confirmed that Flood was leaving to join the White House staff.

"So disgraceful that the questions concerning the Russian Witch Hunt were "leaked" to the media", Trump said on Twitter.

The Post said that it was following the conversation that Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow compiled a list of 49 questions that could be asked of the president - the list published a day earlier by the Times.

The questions are the clearest signal yet that Mueller has enough circumstantial evidence to suspect the president of obstruction, and also has reason to believe Trump might have known of the Russian Federation links.

To name just a few: When and why did you decide to fire James Comey, the F.B.I. director, who was leading the Russian Federation investigation at the time? "No questions on Collusion", he said, "collusion that never existed". As for obstruction of the investigation after he took office, he scoffed, "It would be very hard to obstruct justice for a crime that never happened!"

The questions do appear to indicate that Mueller is looking into possible collusion. Some touch on Russian meddling in the USA election and whether the Trump campaign coordinated in any way with the Kremlin.

Most of the questions reported by the Times ask what Trump knew of certain events, like the June 2016 meeting with the Russian lawyer, or what was he thinking when he did or said something, like firing former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. Another asks if there were any efforts to reach out to Flynn "about seeking immunity or possible pardon". Flynn is now cooperating with Mueller's investigators.
