Sajid Javid appointed Home Secretary after Windrush scandal

Amber Rudd and Theresa May

Javid, 48, is the first member of an ethnic minority to hold the keyoffice of home secretary.

A government clampdown on illegal immigration has begun to identify those without papers, scooping up many elderly people from the Windrush generation - named after the ship that brought the first group of migrants from the West Indies in 1948.

The letter she wrote to Prime Minister Theresa May in January previous year, which was published in the Guardian on Sunday, mentioned her forthcoming visit to Pakistan to finalise an agreement on biometric returns which would make it easier to deport illegal immigrants to that country.

Rudd's departure from the government is a massive blow to May, who was her immediate predecessor in the Home Office.

The Minister of internal Affairs of great Britain of amber Rudd Sunday, April 29, left his post.

"Making sure that we have an immigration policy that is fair, treats people with respect and with decency - that will be one of my most urgent tasks", he told reporters.

Javid, whose family came to the United Kingdom in the 1960s, is now Communities, Local Government and Housing Secretary, reports the BBC.

Although Mr Javid stopped short of promising an overhaul of Mrs May's policies, he said: "I think the (hostile) terminology is incorrect, I think it's a phrase that is unhelpful and does not represent the values as a country".

Rudd finally issued a statement on later that day: "I wasn't aware of specific removal targets". Javid pointed out that his own parents - who emigrated from Pakistan in the 1960s - could have been victims of the Windrush scandal.

"When I heard about the Windrush issue I thought, 'That could be my mum.it could be my dad.it could be my uncle.it could be me'".

Javid joined politics in 2010 after working at Deutsche Bank. He was Business Secretary in the previous government of David Cameron.

"The Windrush Scandal has exposed something rotten at the heart of Government".

Brokenshire served as immigration minister when May was home secretary.

A Home Office spokesman said: "The Home Secretary has apologised unreservedly for any distress caused". Some lost their jobs, others faced difficulty accessing welfare benefits and a few were threatened with deportation.

Fast forward to 2018, however, a government mission to see immigration levels reduced, Windrush generation suddenly found themselves at risk of being deported, even though they had been granted citizenship in the 1970s.

"The suspicion must be that this is part of a continuing cover-up to avoid the Prime Minister's own role in what took place being exposed".

May responded she was "very sorry" to receive Rudd's resignation, the fourth from a cabinet minister in six months' time.

"I think there are many political fingerprints over the mishandling of Windrush cases, including going back to the Tony Blair years", he said.
