WH aide Kelly Sadler dismissed Sen. John McCain's view, says 'he's dying'

Trump Aide Dismisses McCain's Objection to CIA Nominee: 'He's Dying'

The White House declined to comment Friday about a purported remark about Sen.

Sen. Lindsey Graham flew to Arizona this week for a visit with his best friend John McCain that he thought might be his last.

McCain, 81, who was tortured by his North Vietnamese captors during the Vietnam War, said Wednesday that he opposed Haspel's nomination because of her role in the CIA's use of brutal "enhanced" interrogation techniques after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will hold a briefing today to discuss the administration's latest plans and administrative agenda.

On Thursday, Sadler attempted to make a joke about Senator John McCain's opposition to Central Intelligence Agency nominee Gina Haspel by saying "he's dying anyway", an attempt at humor that reportedly "fell flat".

Another White House official told CNN that the joke "fell flat".

Sanders mostly refused to engage reporters' questions about Sadler's remark, saying that she didn't want to validate a leak from an internal White House meeting.

The show's host apologized to the senator's wife, "Yes, I will and hope you accept my apology".

"Last time I saw him, he'd just gotten out of surgery and was really anxious about him", Graham told CNN.

Meghan McCain told viewers not to "feel bad for me or my family".

"I don't understand what kind of environment you're working in where that would be acceptable, and you can come to work the next day and still have a job", Meghan McCain said Friday on the View.

McCain has an aggressive form of brain cancer and was recently in intensive care for an intestinal infection.

In a statement, the White House said that they respect McCain and are offering him and his family prayers, but did not deny that the comment was made. Mr. Trump has never served in the military.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine tweeted his support for Mr McCain's decision, adding that he would also oppose her nomination. Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, a guest on Fox Business, said this week that it was clear McCain's torture as a POW in Vietnam worked. McInerney made the comments in a conversation about the enhanced interrogation practices that took place in the post-9/11 era, in light of Haspel's nomination.

Usually when people are dying, they become spiritually magnanimous because they see the Big Picture, but McCain is apparently wasting his last days trying to settle scores with old enemies.
