East African states bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had issued an alert warning resident, travelers and visitors calling to the region to take serious precaution over the outbreak of the deadly and infectious Ebola virus recently reported in Bikoro, Equateur Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Democratic Republic of Congo will allow a Canadian-developed experimental vaccine in to the country to combat the recent outbreak of Ebola.

The main jobs are checking to see how many people are infected and where; whether there have been past cases that went unreported; making sure people know how to bury the dead safely; and testing and treating people with suspected infections. The epicenter, a town called Bikoro, is hard to reach by vehicle because of poor roads between it and the regional capital, Mbandaka. Seventeen of those 21 infected people died.

Despite its isolation, the outbreak's epicenter is just three hours by road to a city of 1 million people, and public health officials are concerned it could spread, The New York Times reports. But the vaccine is still experimental as it does not have a licence.

In Congo, vaccines will also be administered to local and global health care workers and front-line workers in both affected areas as well as the regions expected to be at risk should the outbreak continue to spread. On July 2, 2017 the World Health Organization declared the end of the most recent outbreak of Ebola in DRC, in which a total of four people died. "In Bikoro I saw first-hand the efforts the national health authorities and all our partners are investing in rapidly establishing the key elements of Ebola containment".

With road travel between Bikoro and Mbandaka taking about 15 hours, establishing an "air bridge" is "the only way to mount a serious response", World Health Organization deputy director-general for emergency response Peter Salama said.

"We have agreement, registration, plus import permit, everything formally agreed already", WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. The first known outbreak, in 1976, happened there.

The country has experienced eight Ebola outbreaks over the past four decades.

The WHO and others have deployed many experts to the area, including epidemiologists, people skilled at contact tracing, and anthropologists who are already learning about local customs. The virus is then passed between humans through blood or bodily fluids, like saliva, sweat, urine, semen, or breast milk.
