Facebook suspends 200 apps over possible data misuse

Facebook is suspending about 200 apps it believes may have misused data

Those changes, according to Facebook, significantly reduced the amount of data that apps could access.

"If Mark Zuckerberg truly recognises the "seriousness" of these issues as they say they do, we would expect that he would want to appear in front of the Committeee and answer questions that are of concern not only to Parliament, but Facebook's tens of millions of users in this country".

This action taken by Facebook comes after CEO Mark Zuckerberg in March had promised that the company would "investigate all apps that had access to large amounts of information". Their conscientiousness, agreeableness and neurotic-ism are forthright for anybody. Hopefully Cambridge University manages to crack down on its approval process, and that social media sites keep mindful about what they allow through their platforms.

Aside from the data set, the application was also able to collect information from around 22 million status updates from more than 150,000 users. The academic said the information had only been used to create "brand reports" and "survey extender tools" and that he had not violated Twitter's policies.

The report further claimed that Cambridge Analytica actually tried to get this data too from the researchers David Stillwell and Michal Kosinski of the University of Cambridge's The Psychometrics Centre.

Grabbing the login details from GitHub granted access to the sensitive data "in less than a minute" and has, in fact, been publicly visible on the website for the past four years.

Facebook is especially focused on apps operating in 2014 or earlier. Reports now claim that "myPersonality" lost its goal of being just an academic project and instead dealt with commercial companies too.

The company did not fully explain why each of the 200 apps were suspended, although Facebook said the apps' alleged mishandling of user data will be fully investigated, including in-person visits. Committee chair Collins stated that one of the areas in which Facebook lacked detail was in questions relating to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Facebook's head of public policy Rebecca Stimson made a statement that Mark Zuckerberg has no plans to testify in front of the UK Parliament now.
