US Senate votes to restore and save Net Neutrality

The US Senate votes in favour of restoring the FCC's net-neutrality rules

"The American public understands how important these protections are to their lives and the future of the internet", Nelson said on the senate floor before the vote.

Markey led the opposition to the FCC in the Senate as lead sponsor of a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution that passed on Wednesday in a 52-47 victory that was celebrated across the Internet.

All the Senate Democrats and Independents voted against it, and were joined by three Republican Senators: Susan Collins of Maine, John Kennedy of Louisiana, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

He said the internet thrived long before the Obama administration stepped in, and he predicted that when the Trump administration's rule scrapping net neutrality goes into effect in June, consumers won't notice a change in service. The rules are officially expected to expire on 11 June of this year and with USA midterm elections approaching, lawmakers may be considering their position ahead of countrywide voting.

"I'm not interested in the politics of the fundraising that goes on by being able to amp people up on net neutrality policy". NCTA - The Internet & Television Association, CTIA and USTelecom told the Senate that reinstating the Obama-era rules "would curb the necessary investment and infrastructure improvements that are critical for connecting more Americans to high-speed broadband and enabling wider internet access, especially in poor and rural areas". The resolution also requires the approval and signature of President Donald Trump, who has spoken against a resolution of this nature in the past.

Some of those internet service providers, including Comcast, Time-Warner and Verizon, are among the largest and wealthiest companies in America.

"Outside Washington, net neutrality rules are popular", Public Knowledge Vice President Chris Lewis stated. While the name for the principle isn't that old, the basic idea predates the internet and has its roots in the telephone and telegraph networks and even older services. Ed Markey, D-Mass., the leader of the Senate effort.

"The grandparents, the gamers, the gearheads, the geeks, the GIF-makers, the Generations X, Y, and Z. This movement to save net neutrality is made up of every walk of American life", he said. This was done by legally defining the internet as a utility like electric or heating fuel which should be accessible to all at a controlled price.
