After months in hiding, Harvey Weinstein appears in handcuffs

Harvey Weinstein will be ‘charged with rape following sexual abuse allegations

Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein was arrested in New York City Friday on charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct related to his interactions with two women, the New York Police Department says. "Nothing about today's proceedings changes Mr. Weinstein's position", attorney Benjamin Brafman said in a statement after the arraignment.

"Cy Vance, the DA in NY, is very precise about when, or he will not indict", Klieman said of the district attorney, who has faced criticism for not pursuing earlier allegations against Weinstein. If convicted on the most serious charges, Weinstein could face between five and 25 years in prison. "Mr. Weinstein obviously can't speak to anonymous allegations, but with respect to any women who have made allegations on the record, Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual". According to Variety, Weinstein will surrender to authorities Friday (May 25) in connection with a 2004 sexual assault case leveled against him by Lucia Evans.

Weinstein, wearing a dark jacket over a blue sweater and white open-collared shirt and dark jeans, appeared pale, and stood next to Brafman, staring into the middle distance with his mouth ajar while prosecutors described a bail agreement. He agreed to post $1 million cash bail, wear an electronic monitor and not travel beyond NY and CT.

Harvey Weinstein has left a police station in handcuffs to head to court to face rape, criminal sex act and other charges.

About 90 minutes later, Weinstein was led by officers into court in handcuffs, grimacing, with his head bowed and his books nowhere in sight. With his arm held by a detective, Weinstein was brought in a back entrance of the courtroom and walked in a half-circle; he dazedly looked around the room and appeared to mouth the word "wow" as he entered.

"Assuming", he added, "we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case".

New York City police also have been investigating allegations by "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta, who told police last fall that Weinstein raped her twice in 2010 when she was drinking and not in a condition to give consent.

"I haven't come out of the shock of it yet", she said. "This is a big strike into the heart of abusive power".

Entertainment industry heavyweights have distanced themselves from Weinstein since the accusations became public. The Weinstein Co's board fired him, and the company filed for bankruptcy in March.

In 2017, he was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the Oscars.

And he began to take aim at the accusations and accusers, noting that the alleged attacks weren't reported to police when they happened and suggesting potential jurors wouldn't believe the women. Al Franken, chef Mario Batali, casino magnate Steve Wynn and, most recently, Democratic New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. But we should also say that this investigatory grand jury is still working. This occurred in Weinstein's NY office in 2004.

Weinstein is charged with first- and third-degree rape and criminal sexual act in the first degree for forcible sexual acts, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement.

Vance made the decision even though he had a covert police recording of Weinstein telling Gutierrez he would not do it again.

During a half-hour in a cell, officials said, he sat on the floor and flipped through the Kazan biography. The New York judge set Weinstein's first court date for July.

The New York charges mark the second high-profile prosecution of a once-powerful show business personality in the #MeToo era.

"We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorized by his vast network of complicity".

Cosby's conviction followed a mistrial past year on the same charges.

The allegations against the disgraced mogul triggered the #MeToo movement, which sought to demonstrate and draw attention to the widespread prevalence of sexual abuse and harassment.
