South Korea: North committed to 'complete' denuclearisation, summit with Trump

(LEAD) South Korea vows to faithfully implement summit agreement with NK

US President Donald Trump said Saturday (May 26) that things are moving "very nicely" towards a summit on Jun 12 in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in met Kim at the border on Saturday for the second time in a month to discuss how to keep Kim's summit with Trump on a track.

Mr. Moon and Mr. Kim agreed at a surprise meeting on Saturday that a possible North Korea-U.S. summit must be held successfully, Mr. Moon told a news conference in Seoul.

Moon said Kim reached out to him to arrange the hasty meeting "without any formality".

Meanwhile, Trump spoke to reporters about the potential summit from the Oval Office on Saturday night, where he had gathered with lawmakers to celebrate the return of Utah man Joshua Holt, who had been jailed in Venezuela for almost two years and finally freed.

Pyongyang's state-run KCNA news agency said Kim "expressed his fixed will on the historic DPRK-US summit talks", using the official abbreviation for North Korea.

But on Saturday, Trump said he was still looking at a June 12 date for a summit in Singapore, adding that talks were progressing very well.

Moon had visited Trump on Wednesday, and an official in his administration gave a 99.9% chance of the summit going through. "We'll see what happens", Trump said.

In response, the North said Friday that it stays open to talks with the US anytime and in any format.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Saturday morning that a logistical team bound for Singapore, led by Trump's deputy chief of staff, Joe Hagin, "will leave as scheduled in order to prepare should the summit take place". -North Korea summit on track, said he delivered a message of Trump's "firm will" to end the hostile relationship with North Korea and pursue bilateral economic cooperation. At that meeting, they declared they would work toward a nuclear-free Korean peninsula and a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War.

They agreed to have their top officials meet again June 1. Worldwide journalists were present, but the USA government can't verify the site's destruction. KCNA said the leaders also agreed to meet frequently.

The agency said the two leaders had reached a "satisfactory consensus" and expressed "their stand to make joint efforts for the decentralization of the Korean peninsula". The US has banned its citizens from entering North Korea, which has a history of detaining US citizens.

But within 24 hours he reversed course, saying it could still go ahead after productive talks were held with North Korean officials.

"What Kim is unclear about is that he has concerns about whether his country can surely trust the United States over its promise to end hostile relations (with North Korea) and provide a security guarantee if they do denuclearisation", Mr Moon said.
