Korean leaders vow to 'meet frequently in the future

Pastel-coloured penuryWhat life is like for ordinary North Koreans

"North Korea summit could be back on very soon", said Harry Kazianis of the conservative Center for the National Interest think-tank in Washington.

Saturday's meeting between Moon and Kim - their second meeting in just a month - came just three days after U.S. President Donald Trump canceled the June 12 meeting in Singapore between himself and the North Korean leader.

Trump rattled the region on Thursday by cancelling his meeting with Kim which had been due to take place in Singapore on June 12, citing "open hostility" from Pyongyang.

Trump tweeted Friday: "Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea".

Seoul's Blue House says it's "carefully" watching the developments between Washington and Pyongyang.

Following Trump's cancellation of the summit, North Korea issued a statement declaring it was still open to talks.

Trump told reporters at the White House that both sides would like the summit to happen. "That hasn't changed. So, we'll see what happens".

However, even if they solve the communications issues, they need to overcome a major sticking point: the U.S. insists that Pyongyang must completely denuclearize. He said: "They very much want to do it, we'd like to do it". "We'd like to do it".

It also was unhappy about the North's failure to allow global observers to verify the dismantling of the Punggye-ri test site, the staging ground for all six of its nuclear tests.

The meeting between Moon and Kim took place in a grand building on the North Korean side of Panmunjom, a surreal and heavily fortified village that lies between the two countries and marks the spot where the armistice ending the Korean War in 1953 was signed.

U.S. officials said the final straw for Trump came when a North Korean Foreign Ministry official called Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" and hinted that Pyongyang was ready for a "nuclear showdown" should diplomacy fail. -North Korea summit a success, the presidential Blue House said. It was the decision made by the two Koreas, Yoon said.

Earlier, the U.S. allies in Asia were blindsided by Trump's cancellation.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon on Friday, Mattis said diplomats are working to get the summit back on track.

Moon had just returned to Seoul after meeting with Trump at the White House. So we're looking at June 12 in Singapore.

The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment on the Saturday meeting.

"Kim has created sort of a cushion for failure that if the U.S. backs away, the Chinese and Russians will be behind him", Wit said.

President Donald Trump has signaled that he's open to proceeding with the sitdown.

In 2003, Moammar Gaddafi gave up his nuclear weapons program in return for sanctions relief, and eight years later was overthrown and brutally killed by rebel forces.

Trump had initially sought to placate North Korea, saying he was not pursuing the "Libya model" and Sanders said he was following "the President Trump model".

The KCNA statement said Kim and Moon agreed to hold high-level talks between their two nations on June 1, and to take steps to quickly implement their efforts to denuclearise the peninsula.

It was also the first time that the summit was being held in South Korea.

Some analysts anxious that cancelling the summit could prompt a resumption in hostilities, including renewed shorter-range missile tests or stepped-up cyber attacks by Pyongyang and increased sanctions or deployment of new military assets by Washington.
