Trump says he wishes he had not picked Sessions for attorney general

Trump lobbied for months to have Jeff Sessions take control of the Russia probe — despite Sessions being a key witness in the investigation

Trey Gowdy (R-SC) offered his thoughts on President Donald Trump's frustrations with Jeff Sessions for not disclosing any possible concerns that would lead to his future recusal as U.S. Attorney General.

Sessions recused himself in March 2017 from any investigation related to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Chaffetz leveled the criticism during an appearance on Fox News's "America's Newsroom" just after President Trump tweeted he'd wished he'd picked someone else for the AG post.

However, Sessions has yet to balk amid the president's consistent attacks.

ABC News published a piece titled "Gowdy disputes Trump's "spy" claim, says Federal Bureau of Investigation acted properly".

Mueller is reportedly looking into the conversation - as well as Trump's repeated attacks, both public and private, on Sessions - as part of his probe into whether the president obstructed justice by colluding with Russian Federation during his campaign. "I wish I did", the president tweeted after quoting Rep. Gowdy's criticism.

Further expanding on his comments in a follow-up interview on Wednesday morning, Gowdy said on CBS "This Morning" that Trump's lawyers "have an obligation to go share with him" what lawmakers learned in the meeting to help tamp down his continued promotion of "Spygate". "Asking Sessions to "unrecuse" himself despite his conflict of interest, in palpable violation of the Department of Justice recusal rules, can only have one objective: the corrupt obstruction of justice", says constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe.

Trump continues to be consumed by the Mueller investigation, tweeting often that it is a "witch hunt", that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation and that he did not obstruct justice by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey last May when he was heading the agency's Russian Federation investigation. I can't think of any major case I handled in 20 years where there was not someone willing to provide information.

Giuliani said that if he were Sessions, he would demand to know from special counsel Robert Mueller the status of the probe and whether there is any reason Sessions should not oversee it.
