Alexander Zverev pulls through thrilling contest against Damir Dzumhur

Alexander Zverev French Open Federer

Alexander Zverev is coming off a five sets win over Damir Džumhur that took 54 games to decide.

Zverev's star shone even brighter within the buildup to the French Open when he gained the title in Madrid and led Rafael Nadal by a break within the closing set of the Rome finale. However, even with his struggles in slams, Zverev's experience served him well and made the difference in the turning point fourth set. Dzumhur held serve routinely, but was taken to deuce before taking the tenth game and set 6-4.

Zverev of Germany needed four hours to defeat 26th seed Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 to teach the next round.

Zverev has yet to reach the last eight at a Grand Slam but his huge talent told in the end against the world No. 60.

One of the few lulls in Zverev's high-intensity match came when Dzumhur collided with a ball boy after winning the third set.

In the match of the day, Zverev secured two breaks of serve in the first set and held the eighth game for a 6-2 result.

The German then saved a match point on his serve to make it 5-5. Nishikori seized his first break opportunity at 6-5 to take the set when Thiem's forehand flew long.

Frequently touted as a future world No.1, the 21-year-old's grand slam performance remains checkered, having never advanced past the fourth round in 11 tries.

4th seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina left the tournament on the third round.

The 34-year-old Verdasco inflicted an early exit on Dimitrov, with the Spaniard winning 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-4 in his 350th clay-court match.

Read on for a recap of Sunday's results from the 2018 French Open, complete with highlights of the day's best action in Paris.

Zverev had lost his last three matches that went the distance at Grand Slam level and was 4-5 in career five-set ties, though this was his first encounter that went the whole hog at Roland Garros.

He might well need to up that schedule considering his quarter-final opponent is No. 7 Dominic Thiem of Austria, who is one of the fittest players on the men's circuit and has reached the past two semifinals at Roland Garros.

Former champion Djokovic had his moments, cutting a frustrated figure for long periods, as he fought his way to a 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 victory over a grieving Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in the third round.

"I made the final of the U.S. Open but lost to my friend Sloane Stephens", Keys said. "Hopefully big things can happen here". He was beaten 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 by Japan's Kei Nishikori. The Austrian, who ended 10-times French Open champion Nadal's streak of 50 consecutive sets won on clay in Madrid, broke decisively for 4-3 in the fourth set with a trademark forehand victor.

On a sunny Court Philippe Chatrier, the 13th-seeded American had two match points at 5-2 and 40-15.

Serving a second time for the match, the 23-year-old Keys let out a scream of "Come on!" when she hit a superb cross-court backhand victor to make it 40-15 and give herself another two chances for victory.
