Furore over 'disgusting' kiss by Philippines' Duterte

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has lashed out at his critics in the past often using less-than-parliamentary languageMore

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has drawn sharp condemnation from politicians and women's rights activists, after he asked a woman to kiss him on the lips, as hundreds of his supporters watched and shrieked during a public event in South Korea.

"It was a despicable display of sexism and grave abuse of authority", a Philippine senator, Risa Hontiveros, said in a statement.

"It is unfortunate that the woman found it her obligation to publicly defend the act as 'no malice, ' when it is the President who is duty-bound to explain not only because it was upon his prodding but he is bound, as a public official, by rules of ethics to explain his unruly conduct", the association's secretary geenral Joms Salvador said in a public statement.

Two women went up the stage, and Duterte told them to share the book.

"Tell him not to interfere with the affairs of my country".

Feminists have denounced Duterte for his "perverted ways", though many Filipinos thought the kiss was just harmless fun. She appeared shy, laughing at the request, but eventually getting close enough for him to move in and plant a kiss on her mouth.

Philippines women's rights group Gabriela described the "macho spectacle" as the "disgusting theatrics of a misogynist president".

During the event, two women were called onto the stage to receive a book from 73-year-old Duterte.

President Rodrigo Duterte gets a warm welcome from the Filipino community in South Korea on June 3, 2018.

It is not the first time Mr Duterte has been accused of inappropriate behaviour towards women.

"The use of such derogatory language. sends a clear message to all judges of the Philippines: in the so-called "war on drugs", you're either with me or against me", Garcia-Sayan said.

Duterte's latest profanity-laced diatribe came after Diego Garcia-Sayan, the United Nations special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, said the president's statements against former chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno were a "vicious attack" on the judiciary. "His repeated acts of machismo is meant as entertainment to hide the reality of his rapidly slipping popularity".

She recalled telling that president that she is married to a Korean national, and that they have two children, adding that she agreed to the kiss to "amuse the audience". "But she was so lovely, the mayor should have been first, what a waste". He was caught telling Filipino soldiers earlier this year to shoot female communist rebels in the vagina, the BBC reported. He said the only policy of his church was to "make yourself happy".
