California 2018 Primary Election

Dems fear shutout in bid to take down GOP's Rohrabacher

Voters in eight states are heading to the polls for primary elections, setting the stage for the midterm elections in November.

District 39, an open race for a seat held by U.S. Rep. Ed Royce, who is not seeking re-election, showed former Republican Assemblywoman Young Kim with a strong lead, and Democrat Gil Cisneros in second place. Look for Yvette Herrell and Monty Newman to rise to to the top in the GOP primary, but which one wins that race is anyone's guess. Democrats have taken aim at 10 of the 14 House seats held by Republicans.

A host of state Assembly and Senate races are also on the ballot, along with local elections in many Southland cities.

California tops a list of eight states with primary contests Tuesday from Montana to MS and New Mexico to New Jersey.

Significant contests also played out elsewhere on Tuesday.

Democratic Sen. Bob MenendezRobert (Bob) MenendezThe Hill's Morning Report: Can Trump close the deal with North Korea?

That's a ding at Democratic incumbent Bob Menendez, who defeated federal corruption charges after a hung jury a year ago.

"I don't think there will be a blue wave at all", registered Republican Keith Smith, 66, said outside a Solana Beach polling place where he voted for Cox. It's the first state referendum on President Trump, whose immigration policies in particular have galvanized many Latino voters.

In Alabama, four-term Republican Rep. Martha Roby was forced into a runoff election next month after failing to win 50 per cent of her party's vote.

Cisneros has been locked in a heated battle with Democrat Andy Thorburn for the number two spot in that district.

In New Mexico, Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham won her party's nomination in the race to succeed outgoing Republican Gov. Susana Martinez. She would be the first Latina Democratic governor in USA history.

Newsom was the first candidate to announce a bid for governor more than three years ago. That state also has a candidate who could become New Mexico's first Native American woman to serve in Congress.

Villaraigosa has been critical of SB 562, saying it is an unrealistic goal and that California should focus on creating universal healthcare through expansion of the Affordable Care Act and Medicare.

Edgar Mito, a 77-year-old retired truck loader in Los Angeles who is a registered Democrat, voted for state Treasurer John Chiang for governor and for U.S. Sen. "He will make a BIG difference!"

Yet frightening scenarios exist for both parties.

Democrats, trying to flip seven House seats, have numerous candidates in three California districts - which could end up strengthening Republican numbers enough to capture both top spots.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein advanced to the November ballot by leading a gaggle of candidates in her state's so-called jungle primary, which puts all candidates on the same ballot, with the top two vote-getters moving forward. That allows the possibility of two candidates from the same party qualifying.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is widely expected to finish atop a 27-candidate field in the race for governor. Hugin appeared alongside Trump at the White House previous year but has distanced himself from him since. But he was on the minds of many voters.

Then he or she would hand the ballot back to the official who would insert it into an electronic voting machine. "It just makes me so mad", she said.

It was a different story in MS, where 66-year-old Gladys Cruz wasn't sure which Republican she would support in the state's Senate primary, but she wants whoever wins to firmly support Trump.

Grossman has said he would "forcefully" defend President Donald Trump's agenda.

Like New Jersey, California is seen as key to the eventual outcome in November.

"While disgraced Senator Bob Menendez was accepting bribes in Washington, Bob Hugin was creating jobs for New Jerseyans", National Republican Senate Committee Executive Director Chris Hansen said in a statement.

Rosendale has GOP establishment support, but that may not be a plus for Montana Republican voters.
