White House adviser says Canada's Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back'

Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

Trump also raised eyebrows by urging the G7 to once again become a G8 by bringing Russian Federation back into the fold and for criticizing his allies, including Canada, for what he called unfair trade barriers.

Mr. Trump's tweets taking aim at the leader of a country that has always been a United States ally came after the President left the G7 summit in Canada to travel to Singapore ahead of a planned diplomatic meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un, CNN reported.

"For Canadians who ... stood shoulder to shoulder with American soldiers in far-off lands and conflicts from the First World War onward.it's kind of insulting", Trudeau said. "And no subsidies. I even said, 'no tariffs, '" Trump insisted while defending his decision to impose a global tariff on USA imports of steel and aluminium.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaks to U.S. President Donald Trump during the second day of the G7 meeting in La Malbaie, Que., on June 9, 2018.

In her own tweet, Green Party leader Elizabeth May says Trudeau is handling what she calls Trump's outbursts and bullying as well as anyone, and that all Canadian leaders need to support the prime minister. "The president could have said that".

"He ought to come out and apologize in the name of the western allies", Kudlow said of Trudeau.

Trump described Justin Trudeau conduct in Saturday's meeting as "meek and mild" behind closed doors.

"POTUS is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around ... on the eve of this", Larry Kudlow told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser, also slammed the Canadian prime minister, telling "Fox News Sunday" there is a "special place in hell" for leaders like Trudeau. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did", Navarro said.

Trudeau, in Quebec City for bilateral meetings with non-G7 leaders after the summit, did not respond to reporter questions as he arrived, but his office pointed to Freeland as the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. relations.

"We spent two days to obtain a text and commitments". The rhetoric was particularly striking given Trump's positive words this week about Kim, a brutal totalitarian.

Mr Trump had already threatened to divide the G7, made up of the US, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Japan and Canada, when he suggested Russian Federation should be allowed to rejoin the group.

The president also spoke at length about trade policy, which has been a contentious issue at the G7 gathering.

Kudlow, returning to the administration's frequent strategy of accusing Trump's opponents of the very behaviour Trump is being accused of, complained that Trudeau was the one who had damaged the alliance.

Mexico hit back with fiscal penalties on USA exports like pork, steel, cheese and whiskey.
