Trump arrives in Singapore ahead of unprecedented US-N.Korea summit - global

Kim And Company Arrive In Singapore Via A Procession Of Chinese And North Korean Jets (Updated)

With all the worldwide attention focused on Singapore and the historic summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Pyongyang must have been buzzing with excitement on the eve of the leaders' arrival, right?

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous US administrations have failed to do.

On Saturday, trump tweeted that he expects Kim Jong-UN's great deeds in the name of his people.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will meet Mr Trump on Monday, ahead of the summit held at 9am on Tuesday.

Trump flew into Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base aboard Air Force One looking to strike a deal that will lead to the denuclearization of one of America's bitterest foes, following a divisive meeting in Canada with some of Washington's closest allies that further strained global trade ties.

Back in North Korea, the running bodyguards always accompany any state vehicle Kim is travelling on and the same was evident during the inter-Korean summit. Traffic was held up in the steamy midday sun and scores of bystanders were penned in by police when Trump went to meet Lee.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon its cherished nuclear weapons.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un have both arrived in Singapore ahead of a landmark summit aimed at ending a nuclear stand-off that has threatened to escalate into armed conflict.

Trump's two-day stop in Quebec for a meeting with the leaders of the Group of Seven industrial nations was exactly the fiasco many feared.

The Korean Central News Agency said issues of mutual concern, related to the "changed era", will be on the agenda at the summit, including bilateral relations, peace and denuclearization.

On the other side, for Kim sharing a common platform with the United States president is itself a landmark as previously the U.S. leaders have avoided doing so.

But many say this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Mr Kim to build his programme and that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to holding on to his unchecked power.

Word does get around, however, and the prospect of a meeting between Kim and Trump had already been on the public's radar.

Kim smiled broadly in the meeting Sunday evening.

Past year it carried out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched missiles capable of reaching the USA mainland, while Trump threatened the North with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged U.S. dotard".
