Comey made 'serious error of judgement' in handling Clinton email probe

Former FBI director James Comey

President Donald Trump on Friday used a 500-page internal watchdog report issued by the Justice Department to declare himself entirely absolved in Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Trump has been eager for the report in hopes that it would vindicate his decision to fire Comey and undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

The conclusions were contained in a 500-page report that document in painstaking detail one of the most consequential investigations in modern FBI history and reveal how the FBI, which for decades has strived to stand apart from politics, came to be entangled in the 2016 presidential election.

Scott Ferson, a Boston-based Democratic strategist, said there's not much new in this report, as anti-Trump texts had already been unearthed between the two Federal Bureau of Investigation employees.

But the report, released on Thursday, also concluded that the FBI's investigation was not tainted by political bias, even as it uncovered an email from Strzok to then-fellow FBI employee Lisa Page during the 2016 campaign saying Trump would not become president.

When it comes to the topic of James Comey, Hillary Clinton seems to have few words.

While Page and Strzok ripped Trump before his November election victory, the pair "told us that these additional text messages were relevant because they reflected that Trump was not singled out by them for criticism or criticized for partisan reasons", says the report. He said that would be better than Mueller's investigation because it's internal and less likely to suffer from mission creep.

Hannity added that other officials made disparaging remarks about Trump supporters, including one who claimed they could "smell" Trump voters after entering a rural Virginia Walmart.

These texts imply a "willingness to take official action to impact a presidential candidate's electoral prospects", the report said.

But the report said there was no evidence "to connect the political views expressed in these messages to the specific investigative decisions" that were the subject of controversy, such as allowing immunity agreements or having fact witnesses sit in on others interviews prior to July 5, 2016. KSTP questioned him about the report, but he declined to comment.

The report criticized Comey for publicly announcing his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton. It also said some FBI agents showed anti-Trump bias, but that bias did not affect the investigation.

Calling the comparison a "false dichotomy", the report says, "the two doors were actually labelled "follow policy/practice" and 'depart from policy/practice".
