Britain to increase health care spending

Boris Johnson on the Brexit campaign trail in front of the Vote Leave battlebus

As part of the initiative the health service will draw-up a long-term plan led by doctors setting out how the resources should be best used, the Government said.

In her interview, May - who campaigned against Brexit in 2016 and has been under pressure from hardline Brexiteers ever since to prove her conversion to the cause - drew attention to the fact that her funding announcement exceeded that 350 million pound-per-week figure.

"But that alone won't be anything like enough, so there will also be more resourcing through the taxation system, and also through economic growth".

Former PM Tony Blair has ridiculed Mrs May for announcing "mystery tax increases and a mythical Brexit dividend" in a lengthy statement after her speech.

Speaking about May's announcement, the foundation's director of research and economics Professor Anita Charlesworth said: "A funding increase of £20.5 billion per year to NHS England's budget by 2023/24 is around 3.4%".

Scottish Health Secretary Shona Robison said extra funding was welcome.

She also signalled that the NHS faces a fresh shake-up with ministers preparing to ditch David Cameron's controversial health reforms in a drive against waste and bureaucracy.

Jeremy Hunt has said the "precise details" of how a £20bn funding boost for the NHS will be costed will not be revealed until the next budget.

Chancellor Philip Hammond would unveil the details of the tax changes, agreed by her Cabinet at a meeting this morning, "in due course", she added.

A so-called "Brexit Dividend" will see extra cash flow to the NHS from the more than £9 billion a year the United Kingdom now sends to the European Union, according to Mrs May. "It must be a plan that enjoys the support of NHS staff across the country - not something dreamt up in Whitehall and centrally imposed".

"I want to make sure that as see as we see this £2 billion in additional money coming to Scotland that those who work in our health service, who have been telling us that they need this key investment, will see this money coming through. It's right that we use that money to spend on our priorities, and the NHS is our number-one priority".

The announcement, timed to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS, which delivers care for free to everyone living in Britain, aims to foster unity in the government and the country after two years of bitter divisions over Brexit, the reports said.

While welcoming the £20.5bn-a-year boost, the group says Brexit "poses the biggest risk to our health service in its history" and the public should get a vote on the final deal struck with Brussels. "And we still haven't addressed social care".

She said technology was "transforming how we engage with the NHS" and it can "improve the way care is delivered".

Councillor Izzi Seecombe, of the Local Government Association, said: "Without essential council services, which help people live healthy lives in their own homes and communities, the NHS can not thrive".
