What must happen for Argentina to avoid World Cup elimination?

Croatia topped Group D with three wins.

The Balkan side shone in victories over Nigeria and Argentina to qualify for the last 16 and they will finish first if they avoid losing to Iceland.

The World Cup match between Iceland and Croatia will be broadcast live on FS1.

Iceland may well be boosted by news Croatia make nine changes from the win over Argentina but they have also shuffled the pack a little, making three tweaks after defeat to Nigeria last time out.

Iceland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson was philosophical.

"We gave the squad a chance to play in the World Cup but from this moment on the group stage is over, we have done our job", he said. "Denmark are strong. We need to play much better if we want to reach the quarter-finals".

As expected, Croatia bossed the midfield and Iceland was perfectly happy with the scenario, looking to hit their opponents on the break.

It's around this time, on the eve of the knockout stages, that theories are being formulated for who will impress moving on at the World Cup, and though England have garnered attention, it's Croatia who are the real lurkers in Russian Federation.

Croatia looked more energetic at the start of the second spell and almost took the lead in the match in the 51st minute but Milan Badelj's rocket from outside the box crashed against the crossbar. Gylfi Sigurdsson, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Alfred Finnbogason are Iceland's most talented offensive players. The midfielder was more accurate two minutes later as he thundered a volley into the back of the net to open the scoring.

Argentina supporters in Buenos Aires react to Marcos Rojo's game-winner late in the second half against Nigeria.

Though they appeared deflated in the ensuing minutes, Sigurdsson was rewarded in the 75th minute with referee Antonio Mateu awarding Iceland a penalty for a handball on substitute Dejan Lovren.

Iceland's hopes were up again, but Perisic's cool finish after he slipped into the left side of the area made sure there would be no fairy tale to tell for the Icelanders.
