Trump tweet on Harley-Davidson move after tariff, European Union trade fight

Harley, stung by tariffs, shifts some production overseas

Moving the production global will allow Harley-Davidson to avoid tariffs the European Union imposed in retaliation for Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

"Europe is a critical market for Harley-Davidson", the company said, adding that it sold almost 40,000 motorcycles there in 2017.

"Our decision to move some of our operations is 100% based on President Trumps tariffs".

Mr Trump had earlier threatened to tax the Wisconsin-based manufacturer which said on Monday it planned to move some manufacturing overseas in response to European Union tariffs retaliating for United States duties.

The tweetstorm comes one day after the president said he was "Surprised that Harley-Davidson, of all companies, would be the first to wave the white flag".

Meanwhile, in order to intensify its sanctions against Iran, the USA has ruled out any exemption to India and Indian companies from carrying out any transactions with Iran. Companies are now coming back to America.

European Union officials suggested Trump had only himself to blame for the falling-out with a company he had previously hailed as "a true American icon". But Harley-Davidson had warned previous year against responding to foreign trade barriers with higher American tariffs, saying the levies could negatively impact sales.

Harley-Davidson announced the closing of a factory in Missouri in January, but the reason for that was slumping domestic sales numbers. Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse.

Trump ridiculed the company for building motorcycles overseas. Trump wrote. "Their employees and customers are already very angry at them".

That statement drew criticism from Eurasia Group president Ian Bremmer, who said on Twitter, "If the Germans started saying this about BMWs or the Japanese about Toyotas, that's a whole lot of Americans out of work". "I was the one that explained to Harley about 100 per cent tax in India. and I got it down to a much lower number. which is, I think, 50 per cent, which is far too much, but they were paying 100 per cent". "And I think the people who ride Harleys aren't happy with Harley-Davidson, and I wouldn't be either". If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit!

"Our region is well renowned for the quality of its staff and its long tradition in the automobile and mechanical engineering sectors", Straumann said in the letter to the company.
