Burari deaths: Police register murder case, suspect occult connection

Police are probing whether it is a case of suicide pact or if foul play was involved

The members have been identified as 75-year-old man Narayan, 60-year-old Partibha, 30-year-old Priyanka, 46-year-old Bhupi, 42-year-old Savita, 24-year-old Nitu, 22-year-old Meenu, 12-year-old Dhiru, 42-year-old Lalit, 12-year-old Shivam and 38-year-old Tina.no suicide was found from the house.

Police officer Vineet Kumar said all of them belonged to a family and most had lived in one home in Burari village in the northern part of the capital.

It is near to where three people were killed and several injured in a shootout between two gangs just two weeks ago, but police said there was no apparent link. "We are probing whether the children were killed or were convinced to take the extreme step", said another officer.

"The initial investigation, the way their hands were tied and mouths gagged, led us to register a case of murder".

"10 of the 11 family members were found hanging when we reached the house". She had lived in the two-storey house with two sons, Bhavnesh (50) and Lalit (45), and one daughter, Pratibha (57), for almost 25 years, a local said.

While 10 bodies were found hanging, the body of Narayan Devi was found lying on the floor in a separate room.

The newspaper said that at about 8am on Sunday, a neighbour who was friends with the man went to visit him and found the door of the house open.

"Prima facie, we suspect they committed suicide but we are also investigating the case with other possible angles of homicide. I couldn't bear watching anymore", he said.

Police are now reviewing surveillance footage in the area as well as interviewing neighbors to determine what happened.

Thukral questioned whether the family had died by suicide.

Chandrakanta, who runs a store nearby, added, "I used to run into all of them off and on".

Calling it a mass murder, a media report said that it was an insider's job, who was under some tantrik's influence.

It was around 7.30 am that Delhi Police received an alert about "six to seven suicides" at the Bhatia residence in Burari. "Let's wait for their investigation to be over", he said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he spoke to area residents, saying that everyone was shocked by the deaths.

Police official Rajesh Khurana told reporters that all angles were being investigated.
