Turkish court rules that USA pastor move from jail to house arrest

American pastor detained in Turkey moved to house arrest

"The United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long-time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson, a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being".

"Release pastor Andrew Brunson now or be prepared to face the consequences", Pence said, addressing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish government directly, calling the detainee "an innocent man - there is no credible evidence against him".

An American pastor who had been jailed in Turkey for more than one and a half years on terror and espionage charges was released Wednesday and will be put under house arrest as his trial continues.

Vice President Mike Pence had also threatened economic sanctions earlier, telling a conference on religious freedom that the White House will respond if Turkey did not take "immediate action".

NBC spoke with Brunson's lawyer, Ismail Cem Halavurt, who says Brunson is not allowed to leave his house under any condition other than to go to interviews or court hearings.

The pastor, who denies the charges, faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty. Cavusoglu said on Tuesday that Turkish authorities had conveyed the message to a delegation of US Treasury and State Department officials during a visit to Ankara last week.

Lawmakers have also called on Turkey to release Brunson, and the final version of Congress's fiscal 2019 defense bill included a provision demanding Turkey "to release wrongfully detained USA citizens including Andrew Brunson and Serkan Golge", a scientist imprisoned in Turkey.

Brunson ran a Protestant church in the city of Izmir and was one of the hundreds of people swept up in arrests by Turkey following the coup attempt.

A Turkish government official said the decision to detain American pastor Andrew Brunson falls within the country's jurisdiction, in a statement Thursday.

In June, US diplomats also spoke about possible sanctions against Turkey, but related to its purchase of anti-aircraft missiles from Russian Federation.

"The United States must reconsider its approach and adopt a constructive position before inflicting further damage to its own interests and its alliance with Turkey".

Shortly after the possibility of sanctions was first announced by Vice President Mike Pence Thursday, Trump wrote on Twitter that the U.S.

A week ago the same court rejected a call by Brunson's defence for his release.

A court in Izmir, Turkey has ordered Brunson to remain in custody until an October 12 hearing. Gülen denies any involvement in the coup.

Pence's announcement was delivered at a conference on religious freedom in Washington.

He is on trial over allegations of espionage on behalf of Kurdish insurgents and the Fethullah Gülen network, a movement that is widely believed to have orchestrated a coup attempt in 2016.

Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and James Lankford of Texas released a joint press release as well.

Last week, a bipartisan group of United States senators introduced a bill that would require Washington to reject worldwide loans to Turkey until Brunson and other Americans are freed or the harassment against them ends.
