Facebook Has IDed Ongoing Political Influence Campaign In Midterms

039;Hilarious & paranoid': Lavrov laughs at idea that Russia uses memes to destroy US democracy

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill were told this week, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

However, the company says it's banned 32 "bad actors" that violate Facebook's ban on coordinated inauthentic behavior.

Facebook announced on Tuesday that it eliminated 32 accounts for what the company described as "coordinated inauthentic behaviour" ahead of the mid-term United States congressional elections in November.

The company said it was unable to link any of the accounts or pages to Russian Federation, but admitted that some of their activity was "consistent" with that of the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-backed organisation accused of interfering with the 2016 presidential.

"We think that is interesting but not determinative", said Alex Stamos, the company's chief security officer. The pages created about 30 events since May 2017 and "The largest had approximately 4,700 accounts interested in attending, and 1,400 users said that they would attend", Facebook said.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook's head of cybersecurity policy, wrote that more than 290,000 accounts followed one or more of the pages.

Black Lives Matters DC didn't immediately respond to a request for more information about the event and its accompanying Facebook page.

"We removed all of them this morning once we'd completed our initial investigation and shared the information with USA law enforcement agencies, Congress, other technology companies, and the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, a research organization that helps us identify and analyze abuse on Facebook", the statement continued. They also did not say whether any of the activity mentioned specific candidates or politicians, and were careful to say that Facebook is not "publicly" linking the activity to any group or government.

Facebook said the entities behind the accounts ran about 150 ads for about $11,000 on Facebook and Instagram, paid for with USA and Canadian currency.

"It's clear that whoever set up these accounts went to much greater lengths to obscure their true identities than the Russian-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) has in the past", the statement said. Facebook, which takes every opportunity it can to remind you that it's "investing heavily" in combating this form of abuse, already has.

The feds have warned for months that Russian Federation and others would try to meddle in the midterms.

"It's still very early", she said, adding: "We're always concerned with inauthentic content". Russian trolls affiliated with the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency used a combination of paid ads and organic posts to spread misinformation and sow discord among voters ahead of the election.

The social network published examples of posts from the accounts.

That said, Facebook acknowledged one instance of a connection between the Internet Research Agency and the fake accounts removed on Tuesday. Those include eight pages and 17 profiles on Facebook, as well as seven accounts on Instagram, which Facebook owns.

Tuesday's actions show the threat of Russian election meddling has not abated, and serves as a wake-up call for the kind of activity Americans might see from various actors in this November's midterms and future elections, some officials said.

But company officials told lawmakers during a series of hearings on Capitol Hill that Russian Federation was possibly involved.

As in 2016, this year's effort is centered around divisive social issues.
