Judge Issues Temporary Restraining Order Blocking 3D-Printer Guns

They also sought a restraining order, arguing the 3-D guns would be a safety risk.

The lawsuit argued that the untraceable and undetected 3D-printable guns were a danger to the public.

The company behind the plans, Defense Distributed, reached an agreement with the federal government in June allowing it to make the plans for the guns available for download, starting this week.

The gun plans were pulled from the internet in 2013 by order of the U.S. State Department under worldwide gun trafficking laws.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Lasnik in Seattle issued a temporary restraining order blocking the release of downloadable blueprints for 3D-printed firearms.

The company's website says it will relaunch today after the settlement with the State Department.

"I am looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public".

"The president is glad this was given more time to review", said spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders, adding that he also agreed with an existing law banning such guns.

"I've had people ask me if I can make something like that for them", she said.

The situation began back in 2013 when gunmaker Cody Wilson, owner of Defense Distributed, uploaded the blueprints for the world's first working 3D-printed pistol, the "Liberator", to his website. Among them were schematics for the Liberator, a single-shot.380-caliber handgun made nearly entirely of 3D-printed plastic.

They say the USA government has failed to study the national and state security implications of the decision and violated states' rights to regulate firearms.

"Some of these weapons may even be undetectable by magnetometers in places like airports and government buildings and untraceable by law enforcement", the letter said.

Washington state attorney general Bob Ferguson had announced on Monday that he would be suing the State Department to get it to change its mind on the so-called "ghost guns".

Ferguson said the federal government was winning the lawsuit when they unexpectedly settled with Wilson and gave him the right to post 3D gun schematics online.

Defense Distributed made national headlines by developing gun computer files that enable consumers to create fully operational firearms with a 3-D printer. "Already spoke to NRA, doesn't seem to make much sense!". "The administration supports this almost two-decade old law".

Attorney Josh Blackman, represents Defense Distributed, the Texas-based company releasing the 3D-printed plastic gun blueprints.

These basic guns can be made by anyone who owns a 3D printer, which uses plastic or other materials to build up an object layer by layer.

An attorney for Defense Distributors told The Associated Press he doesn't know how many blueprints have been downloaded in the intervening days, but some news outlets say the online manuals have been downloaded thousands of times and posted elsewhere online.
